Richard Carney
AI/DATA SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHER

Dr. Richard Carney brings advanced expertise in mathematics, data science, and computational modeling to Kūlia Academy. As an applied mathematician and researcher, he is passionate about helping students develop strong analytical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills while exploring the exciting intersections of mathematics, artificial intelligence, and modern technology.
Dr. Carney earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where his research focused on hybrid dynamical systems, graph theory, interaction networks, and data science. He also holds a Master of Science in Mathematics from Florida State University and dual bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Physics from Wake Forest University.
Prior to joining Kūlia Academy, Dr. Carney served as a Mathematics Lecturer at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, teaching undergraduate courses in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and applied mathematics. Earlier in his career, he taught mathematics at Kauaʻi Community College and Florida State University, developing a reputation for making advanced mathematical concepts accessible and engaging for students at all levels.
Dr. Carney has also worked as a data scientist and researcher on projects involving machine learning, epidemiological modeling, network science, and autonomous systems. His research contributed to COVID-19 forecasting models used for state-level planning in Hawaiʻi and included the development of mathematical models for multi-agent systems and autonomous quadcopters. His work has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications, including a Best Paper Award for research in global health modeling.
With expertise in Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, and statistical learning, Dr. Carney believes that mathematics provides the foundation for understanding today’s most important technological advances. He is committed to inspiring students to think critically, embrace challenging problems, and apply mathematics to solve real-world issues.
At Kūlia Academy, Dr. Carney teaches Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science, helping students build the quantitative reasoning, computational thinking, and research skills needed to excel in advanced STEM coursework, higher education, and future careers in science, engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science.
