JAMES MORICE
MATH and ai/data science TEACHER

Mr. James Morice is a passionate educator, researcher, and technologist who brings a unique blend of advanced computer science and a deep love for teaching to Kūlia Academy. He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Stanford University, where he specialized in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and systems design.
While at Stanford, James worked as a Research Assistant at the Social Learning Lab, where he focused on embodied AI—the study of intelligence grounded in physical interaction with the world. He helped design and code experimental paradigms for virtual reality (VR) experiments using the cutting-edge iGibson simulation platform. His work enabled the creation of immersive VR scenarios that were used to explore participant-based cognitive processes and learning behavior. His research, which combined deep technical skill with creativity and psychological insight, earned recognition for pushing the boundaries of how AI systems can learn through experience.
At Kūlia Academy, Mr. Morice brings this same spirit of innovation and inquiry into the math classroom. He believes that math is not just about getting the right answer—it’s about learning how to think. His teaching style is supportive, exploratory, and grounded in real-world problem-solving. Whether he’s helping students discover the beauty of algebra, guiding them through complex word problems, or connecting geometry to computer science, he strives to make every lesson meaningful and engaging.
James also supports students preparing for math competitions, standardized tests, and future careers in STEM. He works closely with fellow faculty members to integrate AI and data science concepts into the curriculum, helping ensure Kūlia students are not only proficient in mathematics but also excited about its future applications.
The son of immigrants from Nicaragua, James grew up with a deep appreciation for perseverance, cultural pride, and the transformative power of education. These values guide his commitment to ensuring that all students—especially those from underserved or immigrant communities—have the tools, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Outside of the classroom, James enjoys puzzles, coding projects, traveling, and mentoring students in everything from fantasy football analytics to ethical AI. Thoughtful, humble, and intellectually curious, he is deeply committed to helping students build the confidence and critical thinking skills they need to thrive in college—and in life.
